Bykov V.N., Vetryakov O.V., Anokhin A.G., Khalimov Y.S., Fateev I.V., Kaltygin M.V.

Abstract

In recent years, Russia was involved several times in military conflicts occurring in highland areas, such as Afghanistan, Nagorno-Karabakh,  Chechnya, and Georgian-Ossetic borderline. Without preadaptation of  troopers, military operations in highlands are associated with increased  risks of acute mountain sickness, pulmonary edema, and brain edema,  which interfere with combating and may result in noncombatant losses  and even deaths. The present reviews addresses the prospects for using hypoxic preconditioning for accelerated adaptation of troopers to highlands.

.

Abstract

THE BIOMETRICAL IDENTIFICATION OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAMS

Koval V.T., Konoreva N.A., Kozyukhina M.A., Koval Y.V., Nazarenko S.G., Koval N.V.

Abstract

Study results suggesting that electrocardiography may be used for biometric identification are presented. Because remote  communication is increasingly substituting the traditional  communication modes, the identification of communicating subjects  and its confirmation become important aspects of communication systems. Electrocardiography is used in clinical  practice for more than a century. It has been found that ECG records contain not only manifestations of specific conditions but also  individual features than may be used for biometric identification. The present study was carried out using electrocardiographs conforming to the international standards IEC 60601-1:1988, IEC  60601-2-25:1993, and IEC 60601-2-51:2001. The employment of  analog devices operating at 500 Hz provided the same results. Our  proposal is to detect parameters that remain stable during some practically sufficient time and to compute specific indices based on these parameters. The results obtained so far suggest that this approach is promising.

BEHAVIORAL STRATEGIES INFLUENCING THE MENTAL CONDITIONS OF NAVY PERSONNEL

Kutelev G.M., Zaitsev A.G.

Abstract

A retrospective analysis of parameters of the mental conditions of navy personnel is presented. In the course of the current military  reform, the proportion of personnel members who experience  negative feelings has decreased by 30%. At present, different  degrees of fatigue are experienced by 43,9% of navy specialists.  According to the results of a similar study conducted in 2007, this  parameter was significantly higher (72,2%). Several positive trends  are found to emerge, including a decrease in craving for alcohol as a  means for ameliorating emotional stress and an increase in interest  to service duties. Factor analysis of data revealed the most prevalent strategies for securing of mental integrity, including quite promising  ones (self-control, self-education, and creativity), hardly promising  ones (adaptation), non-promising (passive attitudes to self), and even incompatible with military service (stagnation and degradation).

ANALYSIS OF THE SUBJECTIVE ASSESSMENTS OF VIABLE SHIPS CREW MEMBERS

Mosyagin I.G., Bogdanov A.A., Voronov V.V.

Abstract

The analysis of the study of the habitability of the ships of the foreign navies taking into consideration the needs of crew members  serving on a contract basis. Results of approbation of the adapted  method the subject an effective assessment of the conditions of  shipboard life, proposed by G. L. Wilcove, M. J. Schwerin (2008).  The survey anonymously polled a total of 224 member of the crews  of surface ships passing a service contract. To assess the impact of  mood disorders on the outcomes of the survey performed clinical screening test Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale. A  significant proportion are dissatisfied with the quality of life on the  ship (about 40% of the total number surveyed), which demonstrates the necessity of taking effective measures aimed at improving the working conditions of seafarers. A large number of complaints about  the conditions of life demanded a detailed study of the conditions  affecting crew members. It is established that the most problem are  the premises of consumer services, showers, the levels of airborne noise, the ability to relax outside cabins, the adequacy of  sports facilities and their equipment. Comparative analysis with the  results of research in the U.S. Navy points to the similarity in the  nature of dissatisfaction with the living conditions on the ship. Factor analysis allowed us to identify five factors affecting the assessment of viable ship. The results of the analysis of the survey results  indicate the absence of the influence of mood disorders examined for the obtained results. Methodology for the subjective assessment of quality of life can be used in a risk-focused supervision for marine technical objects.

THE MAIN INDICATORS OF THE STATE OF HEALTH OF DRAFT SAILORS AND SERGEANTS IN THE RUSSIAN NAVY IN 2003-2016

Evdokimov V.I., Sivashchenko P.P.

Abstract

Unusual living conditions and the extreme activities create the risk of loss of health or even death of military personnel. We selectively  analysed medical reports on the health status of the personnel and the activities of the medical service by Form 3/MED in military  units, where about 60% of the total number of draft sailors and  sergeants of the Russian Navy served from 2003 to 2016. The  analysis of health problems in draft sailors and sergeants over 13  years showed that the average annual total incidence was  1864,5±91,9‰, the primary incidence — 997,4±60,4‰, the need  for dynamic follow-up — 170,3±20,1‰, hospitalization —  985,2±71,7‰, days out of work — 12 941±898‰, dismissal for  health reasons — 33,82±1,94‰. The death rate was 27,75±5,40  deaths per 100 thousand sailors per year. General and Primary incidence, need for follow-up, hospitalization, days out of work tended to increase and the death rates tended to decrease.  Dismissal for health reasons were relatively stable. Prevention of  diseases of these classes will contribute to improving the health of draft servicemen in the Russian Navy.

APPLICATION OF ESR-SPECTROSCOPY FOR DIAGNOSIS AND PROGNOSIS OF CANCER

Schnurr K., Waterstradt K., Matthes G., Dmitriev P.N.

Abstract

Diagnostic medicine has significantly changed during the past decade. The emergence of proteomics and genomics has significantly increased our understanding of disease. These fields have also  revealed the vast array of proteins that are expressed in various  disease processes, such as cancer. Measurement of these unique  proteins expressed in certain diseases may offer diagnostic clues or  allow patient prognosis to be assessed. Another approach is to  measure the effects that these ligands have on the structure and function of albumin. Albumin is known to play an important role  in modulating the serum concentrations of various proteins produced by tumor cells. In this review, we introduce the reader to the  technique of spin labeling followed by electron paramagnetic  resonance spectroscopy. This method is a powerful tool for evaluating the structural and functional changes that can occur to albumin following the binding of various ligands. We describe the  utility of this technique for the diagnosis of cancer and sepsis, as  well as some other novel potential applications.
