Abstract
Prof. Gennady Nikolayevich Novozhilov MD headed the Department of Navy and Radiation Hygiene of S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy and held the post of Chef Hygienist of Soviet Navy in 1982–1991. At the Department, he was involved in education and research and participated in the military medical aspects of managing the consequences of nuclear accidents at submarines, including the minimization of radiation hazards to navy personal, and in events far beyond Navy routines. For contributing to the solution of theoretical and practical problems related to Chernobyl Accident, Prof. G. N. Novozhilov was granted with one of the highest awards — the Red Star Order. He supervised developing the concept of thermal preconditioning of military personnel, generalized data on nutrition upon service and medical treatment of pacificator troops and of armed forces involved in Chechen military conflict. After retirement in 1991, Prof. G. N. Novozhilov remained true to his mission. He delivered educational courses at higher schools in Saint Petersburg and was involved in research carried out at Laboratory of Nutrition and Water Supply of Military Medical Academy. In January 2018, he could be 87; however, he deceased on 15 Jan. 2005. The present article is a tribute from veterans of the Department of Navy and Radiation Hygiene and colleagues and apprentices to the memory of outstanding tutor Prof, G. N. Novozhilov.
