Ship’s doctors in diplomatic and humanitarian missions of warships of the Russian Imperial Navy

Abstract

The data on a number of diplomatic missions in which ships of the Russian navy participated are presented. The work of ship’s doctors during the visit of Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich to Japan, the diplomatic mission to the Kingdom of Montenegro in 1910 and assistance to victims of the earthquake in Messina in 1908–1909 is shown.

Abstract

The article provides information about the history of creation, formation and work of the Naval department of the Rostov Medical Institute in the period of its existence from 1955 to 1983. It describes the achievements of the faculty staff on the organization and conduct of the educational process in training reserve officers of the medical service from among the university students, creating educational and material base of the department, success in scientific and educational work. A considerable part of the article is devoted to the description of the work of the team on military-patriotic education of students. There is a brief description of the officers of the Department.

Expansion of the volume and types of medical care on the ships of the Northern Fleet during its formation and modern development

Abstract

The scope and nature of medical care in the Navy of Russia, as well as other countries of the world, has always been determined by specific historical conditions, the development of medical science and medical equipment and technologies, achievements in surface and underwater shipbuilding of a certain period, creating immediate conditions for medical care at sea. With the improvement of technological conditions of medical facilities of surface ships and submarines, the development of medical equipment, instruments, pharmacological preparations and treatment methods, the scope and type of medical care on ships and submarines expanded from self- and mutual assistance to qualified and specialized. The long-term presence of ships in the far sea zone and ocean zone in various geographical areas required organizational decisions to ensure the preservation of the health of military personnel throughout the entire period of navigation, guaranteed provision of qualified and specialized medical care in cases of acute diseases, emergencies and injuries.

In memory of Richard Chancellor

Abstract

The article highlights historical events and outstanding personalities who played in the XVI–XVIII centuries significant role in the development of medical care and education in our country. Among them is the English captain Richard Chancellor, who opened a “window to Russia” during an expedition in search of a northeastern sea route to India and China. His arrival on the territory of the modern city of Severodvinsk at the mouth of the Northern Dvina River served as the beginning of trade and diplomatic relations between Russia and Europe. A few years later, Tsar Ivan the Terrible founded the first Russian seaport of Arkhangelsk, where trade was active, where invited European scientists, teachers, and professional medical personnel came. Subsequently, the first state medical institutions, pharmacies and hospital schools were Currently, more than 1,000 foreign students are studying at the Northern State Medical University at the international faculty of general practitioners, and there is a classroom dedicated to the history of marine and naval medicine. In August 2023, in Arkhangelsk, in memory of Richard Chancellor and in honor of Indian Independence Day, a concert was organized on the museum ship “Kommunar”.

Abstract

The name of our contemporary naval physician, Doctor of Medical Science, Professor, Colonel of the Medical Service Alexey Stepanovich Guk is not widely known to the medical community of Russia and neighboring countries, however, its professional activity was connected with maritime medicine for more than a quarter century.

Guk scientific activity covers almost all sections of dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. He was an innovator in emergency maxillofacial surgery, therapeutic and orthopedic dentistry. It should be noted that nowadays Guk’s colleagues honor his memory, as evidenced by the International scientific and practical conference “Theoretical and applied issues of maxillofacial surgery and dentistry”, held on February, 3rd 2022, which was organized by the International Academy of Ecological Science, Human and Nature Security and dedicated to professional activities of А.S. Guk.

Abstract

The presented article shows historical milestones and scientific schools of development of the Department of Naval Surgery of the Military Medical Academy named after. S. M. Kirov for 85 years. During this time, the department was headed by twelve heads, and each of them determined its educational, scientific and medical activities. However, applied issues have always been at the forefront of its development, i.e., the pathogenesis and treatment of injuries characteristic of the Russian Navy. The Department of Naval Surgery of the Military Medical Academy celebrated its 85th anniversary in the prime of life and is performing the most important tasks set by the command of the Academy and the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
